Previously, state Trooper David Beohm said on Twitter that an "officer involved fatal shooting" happened in Wyomissing Borough on the 900 block of Spring Street.
Now, in a release, state police and the Berks County District Attorney's Office say the man they killed had attacked two people just hours earlier.
Officials say the suspect, whose name was not reported in the release, was caught on camera walking up to a porch where two people were sitting and shooting them both at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Also captured in the clip, authorities said, was the suspect's license plate.
Sometime after the double shooting in the city, local police spotted the suspect's vehicle in Wyomissing Borough near the Berkshire Mall, authorities said. He led them on a short chase to the 900 block of Spring Street, where his car became disabled after driving into a resident's backyard, officials wrote.
"Multiple units" including state troopers, Wyomissing police, and West Reading police surrounded the man "and gave several verbal commands," the release says. When the suspect — who was allegedly "observed holding a rifle with a scope across his chest" — "failed to obey their commands," the officers shot him, authorities said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, they added. In addition to the Philly attack, police said he was sought in connection with a Gloucester City, New Jersey arson fire on Monday, March 27.
The matter remains under investigation by state police and the Berks County District Attorney's Office, the release concluded.
